This 87-mile bike path around Italy's largest lake

Italy's largest lake is now completely circumnavigated by a stunning new bike path that spans 87 km.

Bicyclists will soon be able to ride around Italy's biggest lake thanks to the revamped trail system now under development there. When finished, the bike route will run the whole length of northern Italy's Lake Garda, not far from Verona.

It will take another year to finish the Garda by Bike initiative. According to Lonely Planet, the route will carry cyclists from Lombardy through Trento and Veneto and back again via a combination of preexisting tracks and newly constructed pathways. The quordle route will link up with the continental EuroVelo 7 and EuroVelo 8 bike routes.

While tackling the whole trip may seem intimidating, cyclists of all ages and ability levels will enjoy the Garda by Bike track. The trail is flat and broad, so regular bikes may use it without any modifications. A beautiful stretch of the walk along the lake's western coast is now accessible, and it extends for little over a mile from Capo Reamol.

Italy has established a number of initiatives to get more people outside, including a number of other trails, so the outdoors aren't the only option for Italians. In June, the country made news by announcing a new hiking path, Sentiero dei Parchi, that would eventually link all 25 of its national parks. Existing Sentiero Italia, which is over 4,350 miles long and travels through 18 of Italy's 25 national parks, will be included into the path in various places.

A sign of "how much we value our immense natural heritage and its valorisation when it comes to sustainable tourism, especially in this post-COVID moment when we all feel the need to be outside a bit more," as Sergio Costa, Italy's Minister of the Environment, put it, the path will not be completed for years.

Since the nation is still closed to U.S. tourists, they won't be able to use the newly built trails for hiking or biking anytime soon. Check out our country-by-country guide for additional information on where U.S. citizens may go currently.
