So I'm writing about something that all of us do everyday: cracking passwords. There's plenty of programs out there for this like: Ase 2000 V1.56, which I'll tell more about in a sec; John The Ripper; Rainbow Crack; C-trit; and CoWPAtty (short for Carpet Password Tester). A couple of these programs are free, but most of them are not. The software I did find for free was Ase 2000 V1.56, John The Ripper, C-trit, and Rainbow Crack. I tested all three free password crackers on the same password wordlist for this review on my Athlon XP 1500 system with 512 MB of RAM running FreeBSD 6.1 64 bit.Ase 2000 V1.56 is a program that cracks LM hashes on windows machines using either rainbow tables or brute force methods to crack the compared hashes. It is a GUI based program and comes with an MD5 hash generator.John The Ripper is a freeware password recovery tool designed to help you recover lost passwords for several file formats (e-mail clients, instant messaging clients, databases, etc.) by using a dictionary-based attack. Its primary purpose is the recovery of lost UNIX/Linux passwords. It supports multiple crypt formats and variations (see below).C-trit was created to run against UNIX Crypted password files (.tc). It uses the standard UNIX crypt( ) function to encrypt. This utility can also produce random or dictionary based passwords for all versions of UNIX and Linux computers. Rainbow Crack is an open-source password cracking application written in C. It can be used with various cracking algorithms via command line or with its graphical user interface. It has stronger password validation capabilities than other password crackers. Rainbow Crack was originally designed to work against LM hash format, but also were able to recover passwords for DES and DESX using the statistical approach.There are several different types of passwords that may be used, depending on the operating system or web browser being cracked. 1) LM hashes are often used in Unix/Linux systems for authentication purposes, because they are simple to generate and easy to crack. All of these hashes have a fixed length ranging from 8 to 32 characters long. 2) MD5 hashes are used in Windows 2000, NT, XP, and Vista. They use much more complex algorithms to generate a fixed length hash that is much harder to crack.3) Rainbow tables are generally used for brute force password cracking because they are the most efficient way to crack hash formats that have spaces or special characters in them. Rainbow tables can be generated using online tools or using specialized software like Password Cracker Suite .4) Dictionary file passwords are based on the user's password history. Many times these passwords differ from the operating system standard because of typos, words misspelled, or other mistakes.
